Hi, I am planning a trip with my boyfriend to New York sometime in October (yes we haev left it very late :) ) but I was wondering where the best places to stay were. I've heard and seen that the accomodation is very expensive and the rooms that you get are very small for what you pay. I don't mind doing a lot of walking as I have heard that thats a great way to see the city, but was wondering if I should be looking in a certain district. (I am young and want to see a lot the couple of days that I am there).
Thanks in advance :D.

Hi Carl,
I spent a summer working at a restaurant/gift shop outside Denali a few years ago. I also went back for a week trip with my parents the next summer. Here are some of my suggestions:
Anchorage -- a beautiful city, but use it as a stopping point before/after exploring the rest of the state.
Kenai Peninsula -- My ABSOLUTE favorite part of Alaska (that I saw, anyway). Seward and Homer (including particularly the "Salty Dog" and "Halibut Cove") are excellent little towns and the drive to them is breathtaking. I'd actually suggest spending a few days (or 4 or 5) focusing your time down on the Kenai over the Anchorage area.

Denali Park -- it's gorgeous, especially if you get lucky and the clouds aren't covering the mountain. Hiking is fabulous there, but not necessary. You can take the bus in and see all kinds of wildlife on the ride.

Red Tape is right, although he makes it seem like Tempe/Phoenix isn't hot in the summer -- it DEFINITELY is just as hot, if not hotter than Tucson. I went to high school down there and it's blistering. 8)
Depending on how long you have to visit, I'd spend the majority of your time in San Diego, since from what I know about it and have experienced, it's just a nicer city and more interesting with the water right there.
If you want to visit ASU/UofA, you should spend a night or two or three in Tempe (it's an hour or so by plane or like 5-6 hours by car from San Diego) -- try to stay right off Mill Avenue in Tempe as that will put you closest to the ASU nightlife.
Tucson is only 1/5-2 hours from Tempe by car, so you can make it down there on a nice day trip.

To me, the most beautiful place is Ocean City Maryland. Ocean City is 10 miles of diverse people and sights, breathtaking sunsets on bayside as well as gorgeous sunrises over the ocean. I just returned from there and winessed the most incredible thunderstorm with lightening over the ocean! Stunning! The beauty continues to the rich history of the boardwalk and bayside fishing piers..

There is no ferry (now - hopefully the super ferry will head there eventually). You'll have to fly on Go! or Hawaiian. It will take maybe 30 minutes for flight time and 2 hours total (checking in, waiting, etc)...

The volcano stopped for two days - just turned off like a faucet. And then started again. It is flowing now. There is no guarantee it will be flowing when you get here. It's a true adventure! :).

San Francisco is nice, the Grand Canyon is nice - but they are both very different from Hawaii. If you want to visit Hawaii, visit Hawaii! Yes, Waikiki is pretty crazy these days, as is most of Maui, but as the PP said, there is more to Hawaii than that. Even Oahu, if you stay out of Waikiki, is an incredibly beautiful and diverse island with tons of hiking and adventure opportunities..

Hi everyone,
I'm currently a first-year University student, but want to take next year off so I can get some travelling done! I plan to be away for about five months.
I'd probably leave around June-ish 2009, so that I have time to amass as much money as possible, but I'm not too sure where I want to go. I've been looking at IEP's programs, and they seem very good, so I may organise my travelling through them. Anyone got any experiences with them?
I've been thinking of the US for a while now, particularly NYC, however, I'm turning 19 in July next year - I'm a little worried that my young age will inhibit the things I can do over there. I'm not a drinker at all, but a lot of the great music places and concerts may be unavailable to me because of the freaking 21 age thing.
So, basically - would it be worth it? My second choice is Ireland (probably Dublin although I've been told Galway may be better) which is advantageous because I'll have a lot more freedom.

I wouldn't in a million years travel by Greyhound across the country. I'd rather be in a torture camp. I've gone about halfway across on Greyhound but crossed the country twice on Amtrak. There's really no competition between them. There are places that you can't see on the train though but if you can get close enough you could suffer for a few hours on Greyhound or Amtrak themselves may provide a bus which are much nicer than Greyhounds..

I took pictures of those trees before! About a few years back! They were huuuuuuge!.

Gotta say Universal studios.. Definitely! But the kids love Disney..

If you're going for the natural tour here's a link
deleted link that had nothing to do with the topic.

there are live bands in the casinos that you can dance to.

Ordinarily you can visit with on a Visa waiver for 90 days but will be disqualified on the basis of your record. With the Visa Wavier, you are admitted to the US at the discretion of the immigration officer, who will must likely turn you back if your record shows up..

that was an appropriate way to mention a site, disclosing your association with it..

what does that mean? a big harvest???
in new england fall is a great place to be. leaves are brilliant colors, farms put on things like corn maze's and haunted hay rides. i love it..
|
i second the flight idea. the drive from NYC to Buffalo is terribly boring!.
|
Anywhere that is not a city in the US is cow boy country. i live in NY and if i go 20 min out of town its nothin but pick ups and harleys and country music. its terrible..
|
I live near it, and think that the main reason it never caught anyones interest is simply due to the fact that is isnt impressive. I mean the english ones makes you just think to yourself, "how the heck they do that?" but those in NH are just like, oh cool some indians moved some rocks around haha.

Thanks I'll look those up. We will be passing there on a Thursday late afternoon leaving on the following morning. Saratoga sounds nice..
