Customs Donates Counterfeit Apparel to Hurricane Victims
WASHINGTON (September 7, 2005) - In an unusual but creative move, U.S. Customs and Border Protection donated approximately 100,000 counterfeit apparel items, valued at $2.3 million, to the victims of Hurricane Katrina at the Houston Astrodome Tuesday. Customs officials, working with the Red Cross and St. Luke’s Methodist Church, distributed a wide range of counterfeit items it has seized over the past year to thousands of people housed in the Astrodome seeking temporary shelter and relief from the most devastating natural disaster in history, including women’s, men’s and children’s apparel such as jeans, shorts, slacks, shirts and lightweight jackets. The owner of the trademarks must agree to donations of counterfeit merchandise and one Customs official listed such labels as Jack Nicholas, Fubu and Blue Boy among the donated items. “This is the kind of thing we would expect most companies would go for,” said Bill Anthony, a senior Customs spokesman. “These are extraordinary circumstances and the corporate world is really pitching in.” Customs officials seized nearly $8 million in counterfeit apparel through April—the mid-point in fiscal year 2005, which ends Sept. 30. The delivery to the Astrodome consisted of counterfeit apparel, primarily made in China, transshipped through Mexico and seized by Customs in Laredo, Dallas and El Paso, Tex. The brands most often seized by Customs include Tommy Hilfiger, Chanel, Armani and Ralph Lauren but it could not be learned whether those brands were among the donated items.
But Mumbaikars are RICH themselves..they did not ask for clothes or water.
