The surgeries costing tens of thousands of dollars in U.S.A costs one fifth (20%) to one third (33%) in India and in many other developing nations. In most cases surgeries are performed in state-of-the-art equipped hospitals by surgeons trained in U.S.A.

Companies have been outsourcing for at least 3 decades. Just look around you. The chances are most any thing we consume has some element of offshore in it. There are very few limitation to what can not be outsourced. From simple mundane products i.e. shoes, apparel, to highly complex products, software that controls the space shuttle launch, are being outsourced today.

Why outsource? Simple answer is to cut costs and stay competitive.

For many in the U.S.A it is not only a question of cutting costs but to choose between staying alive or live mediocre life and die in suffering. In 2005, U.S.A healthcare expenditure accounted 16% of national GDP eclipsing $1.7 trillion, highest than any other developed nation, yet there were 46 million uninsured Americans. More than 23 million of these uninsured Americans do not qualify for any government program to receive healthcare and are required to pay in full for their healthcare services. Majority of these uninsured are not able to pay high cost of surgeries such as heart surgery, knees, hip, and many others. The cost of these surgeries easily exceeds tens of thousands of dollars e.g. heart surgery $75,000, knee surgery $35,000, hop replacement $48,000, and in many cases it is not uncommon to see costs exceeding hundred of thousands of dollars.

The surgeries costing tens of thousands of dollars in U.S.A costs one fifth (20%) to one third (33%) in India and in many other developing nations. In most cases surgeries are performed in state-of-the-art equipped hospitals by surgeons trained in U.S.A.

For those unable to afford surgery or other expensive medical treatments in U.S.A. traveling to India and other nations for their medical treatment makes an easy decision. The decision is easy one. It is a choice between to stay alive and healthy or live in agony or not live at all.

The healthcare outsourcing is not a temporary trend, but a mega-trend. It is hard to escape from a phenomena that saves billions of dollars, thousands of lives, and improves quality of life. It is here to stay.

What does this mean for all of us? The information technology has close the gaps and ranks among have and have not. We must find a way to quickly adapt and embrace the ways that deliver the highest value of our resources.
